Go cake crazy in and around Glastonbury

The actress Emma Thompson once described Britain as “a tiny little cloud-bolted, rainy corner of sort-of Europe, a cake-filled misery-laden grey old island.” While the weather might occasionally live up to that description, there’s no denying one thing – Britain does cake exceptionally well.

Whether you’re celebrating a walk up Glastonbury Tor, taking a break from exploring the High Street or simply looking for the perfect afternoon treat, here are some of our favourite places for coffee, tea and spectacular cake in and around Glastonbury.

The Middlewick Café

Start your cake adventure right here at Middlewick. Our award-winning café sits at the foot of Glastonbury Tor and is the perfect place to relax whether you’re staying with us or simply visiting for the day.

Alongside our all-day brunch menu, you’ll find a tempting selection of homemade cakes, traybakes and seasonal sweet treats, served with ethically sourced organic coffee from Brazier Coffee Roasters, over a dozen speciality teas and local Somerset drinks. Our cakes are sourced from talented local producers, with gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options always available.

With over 70 indoor seats, a spacious terrace overlooking the Mendip Hills and plenty of outdoor seating in our gardens, it’s an ideal place to catch up with friends, refuel after climbing Glastonbury Tor or simply indulge in coffee and cake. We’re also dog friendly, so your four-legged companions are welcome inside and outside, with their own treats available too.

Open daily from 8.30am–4pm. Our all-day brunch menu is served until 3pm, with coffee and cake available until closing.

Rainbow’s End Café, Glastonbury

Hidden away just off Glastonbury High Street, Rainbow’s End has been one of the town’s best-loved cafés for decades. Everything on the menu is vegetarian, with plenty of delicious vegan and gluten-free options. Their homemade cakes are legendary, with generous slices that pair perfectly with a pot of tea or locally roasted coffee.

If the weather is kind, enjoy your cake in the peaceful courtyard garden. If you’re in a hurry, takeaway cake is always a good idea before continuing your wander around Glastonbury’s independent shops and historic streets.

Current opening hours: Thursday to Tuesday, 12pm – 4pm (closed Wednesdays).

Abbey Tea Rooms

Located opposite the entrance to Glastonbury Abbey, Abbey Tea Rooms offers everything you’d hope for from a traditional English tea room. Expect homemade cakes, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and jam, afternoon teas and a wide selection of loose-leaf teas.

The welcoming atmosphere, dog-friendly courtyard and views towards the Abbey make this a wonderful place to stop after exploring one of Somerset’s most famous historic sites.

Current opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 10am – 5pm; Sunday, 12pm – 5pm.

Double Gate Farm Tea Room, Godney

Just a short drive from Middlewick, Double Gate Farm Tea Room is tucked away in the peaceful Somerset Levels village of Godney. Part of a family-run farm and B&B, it’s known for homemade cakes, cream teas and generous afternoon teas made using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.

The gardens provide a lovely setting on a sunny afternoon, making it an ideal stop after exploring the Levels or cycling through the surrounding countryside.

The Lemon Tree Café

Located at the Somerset Willow and Wetlands Centre in Stoke St Gregory, The Lemon Tree Café is worth the drive. After exploring the fascinating visitor centre and willow displays, reward yourself with homemade cake and coffee before taking a stroll around the nearby wetlands.

The café offers a relaxed atmosphere and makes an excellent stop while exploring one of Somerset’s most unique attractions.

Sweets Tea Rooms

Situated alongside the Somerset Peat and Science Museum, Sweets Tea Rooms offers a wonderfully quirky day out. After browsing fascinating local artefacts, historic machinery and displays celebrating Somerset’s peat industry, settle down with a slice of homemade cake and a proper cup of tea.

The museum and tea rooms are run with real passion and make a hidden gem for visitors wanting to discover a different side of Somerset.

The Drawing Room, Butleigh

Nestled inside a beautiful 15th-century building in the picturesque village of Butleigh, The Drawing Room has become well known for excellent coffee, homemade cakes and relaxed surroundings.

The café also hosts occasional community events and pop-up experiences throughout the year, making every visit a little different.

As opening days can vary, it’s worth checking before making a special journey.

Hundred Monkeys Café

No visit to Glastonbury is complete without stopping at Hundred Monkeys. Overlooking the bustling High Street, it’s one of the town’s most popular cafés and a brilliant place for people-watching over coffee and cake.

Their homemade cakes always include excellent vegan and gluten-free choices, while the extensive tea menu gives you plenty of excuses to stay a little longer. Whether you’re meeting friends, working remotely or simply enjoying some solo relaxation, Hundred Monkeys is always a great choice.

Chantry Tea Gardens, Kilve

Combine a walk along the dramatic Jurassic coastline at Kilve Beach with tea and homemade cake in the beautiful Chantry Tea Gardens. The gardens are especially lovely during the spring and summer months, although opening days are seasonal, so check before setting off.

Brean Down Café

If you’re climbing Brean Down, there’s no better reward than coffee and cake afterwards. The café at the foot of the National Trust headland is perfectly placed to refuel after enjoying one of Somerset’s finest coastal walks.

Tyntesfield

One of the National Trust’s most spectacular Victorian estates, Tyntesfield is a wonderful destination at any time of year. While the main restaurant is excellent, don’t miss the smaller Garden Café tucked away within the estate, where you can enjoy homemade cakes surrounded by beautiful gardens.

Montacute House

Another National Trust favourite, Montacute House combines magnificent Elizabethan architecture with beautiful gardens and parkland. After exploring the grounds, stop by the café for tea, coffee and a well-earned slice of cake before heading home.
