The Middlewick - Our Story

Welcome to Middlewick which is in the hamlet of Wick just outside Glastonbury at the foot of Glastonbury Tor.  Wick is an old word for community or trading place.  This farm which dates from the at least the 17th Century would have been in the Middle.  It was a farmstead with dairy and sheep and in the 1970s and 1980s it also was the site of a sheepskin manufacturer.

In the late 1980s the farm was converted to holiday cottages.  Thatch roofs were taken down and crumbling outbuildings were turned into the cottages that you see now.

How did we end up here?
It was never in our plans to buy holiday cottages, life just took a few twists and turns and we ended up here at the base of Glastonbury Tor in 2011. It all started when our son Thomas, a keen golfer was offered a place at Millfield School. We came out to have a look at the school and the area. Thomas loved the school and we decided to go and have a look at the town of Glastonbury as we had never been there before. We took Wick Lane thinking it would lead us into the town. As we were driving we went past a property with a sign that said Mapleleaf Middlewick Holiday Cottages. Jill, being Canadian, had a giggle to think that there were Canadians living up here. It turned out the place was for sale and the rest is history. Middlewick is now our home.

Going Eco-Friendly
This was just the beginning! In August 2014, we installed our BioMass Heating system and in October 2015 we added 120 photovoltaic panels (PV) to give us up to 30kw/h of electricity! This system heats our 9 cottages and indoor swimming pool. In 2022 we added another 50 PV panels to help power our fully Electric Farm Shop and Café Restaurant.

We built a stunning yoga studio, converted our group space to a spa room and added 3 Shepherds Huts as therapy treatment rooms. Open to both staying guests as well as day visitors, we offer Day Spa packages, a whole host of treatments, as well as overnight spa breaks. For more information about our Spa facilities and treatments visit our spa pages.

Farm Shop V.1
The first version of our farm shop, a small but extremely well stocked little shop, which served locals through the pandemic. We had local meats from our neighbours farm's, fresh produce, local dairy products, ready meals, beers, wines and cider. We stocked as much local Somerset Food and Drink as we possibly could. Supporting local producers is very important to us and this is where we could show them that support. In 2022 the shop was retired and repurposed into our Guest Reception.

Converted Horse Box Cafe
Our stunning converted horsebox was a café that opened throughout the summer months. From the fully equipped kitchen we served up breakfast, lunch and snacks. Every day was something different. Coffees and Cakes also became available from the Farm Shop. This has now been retired, with our purpose built farm shop and café in its place.
